Collection managers need specialized software to both manage and provide access to information about their collections.
CollectionSpace is used by organizations to manage collections of
- fine and contemporary art
- history and material culture
- anthropology and ethnography
- herbaria and botanical gardens
- and others with complex description and management requirements.
CollectionSpace handles all the critical collection management operations such as acquisition, cataloging, import/export, data entry, loans, location and movement, media handling, object entry and exist, and reporting. Very specific roles and permissions can be defined for proper security.
The free open source software was designed and built by a network of museums and academic research institutions with support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for the benefit of museums, libraries, municipalities, and other cultural heritage collecting organizations worldwide. CollectionSpace is stewarded by LYRASIS, a non-profit member organization that supports archives, libraries, and museums.
